Mega-energy storage system in Swedish university city Uppsala will contribute to Vattenfall's mission to "fossil-free living within one generation"

Vattenfall has selected Alfen to supply a 20 MWh battery energy storage system to the university city of Uppsala in Sweden, also the fourth-largest city in Sweden. This is the third large-scale energy storage system that Alfen will supply to Vattenfall.

The energy storage system will be connected to the power grid of distribution system operator Vattenfall Eldistribution. The system will be used to address grid congestion and to take advantage of trading opportunities in the flexibility market.

Storage system based on BMW car batteries

Alfen's scope includes the supply of a 20 MWh (5 MW) energy storage system based on BMW car batteries, Alfen's energy management system 'TheBattery Connect', and the local grid connection.

Stephanie Schockaert, Sales Manager Energy Storage at Alfen, says: “We are proud to have been selected by Vattenfall to supply our battery energy storage system, continuing our long-standing relationship in both EV charging and energy storage. Our previous projects for Vattenfall, including a 3 MWh energy storage system for the Princess Alexia Wind Farm in the Netherlands and a 12 MWh energy storage system as part of a new hybrid solar and wind farm, position us well to successfully deliver this project as well.”

Plug-and-play concepts

Alfen specializes in BMW battery-based energy storage systems, plug-and-play concepts to minimize on-site time, and scalable modular concepts.

Tina Ivarsson, Senior Project Manager at Vattenfall, comments: “The development of this new storage system in Uppsala will contribute to alleviating grid capacity constraints. We look forward to working with Alfen on this project because of their extensive experience and the involvement of supplier Sebab.”
