Greater grid stability through the realisation of a wind energy storage system at Neeltje Jans
Alfen, in collaboration with E-Connection and Van Gelder, has successfully delivered and commissioned phase 1 of the EOS Volans energy storage system at Neeltje Jans. The system has a power capacity of 20 MW and a storage capacity of 40 MWh and has been fully operational since this quarter.
With this installation, Alfen contributes to an important step towards a more flexible and future-proof energy system within the Closed Distribution System OSKneT. The energy storage system supports the more efficient use of sustainably generated electricity and enables the provision of grid-support services.
Rapid delivery through strong collaboration
Thanks to the close cooperation between E-Connection, Alfen, Van Gelder and other involved partners such as Enerzien, this project has been realised within a relatively short timeframe. In just over two years – from permit application to completion – the system has been developed, built and successfully tested.
Alfen was responsible for the delivery, installation and integration of the battery system and the associated electrical infrastructure. The system has been designed with flexibility and reliability in mind within a complex energy environment.
Supporting a future-proof energy system
EOS Volans is a grid-forming battery and plays a key role in stabilising and optimising the electricity grid. The system enables wind energy to be stored temporarily and deployed at a later stage, including in island mode during maintenance of the high-voltage infrastructure.
Sustainability and environment
During the realisation of the project, careful consideration was given to the ecologically valuable surroundings of Neeltje Jans. By adhering to strict ecological working protocols, disruption to flora and fauna has been kept to a minimum.
Outlook
Following the successful completion of phase 1, attention is already turning to phase 2 of EOS Volans. This planned expansion includes a system with a projected capacity of 20 MW and a storage capacity of 90 MWh.
Alfen is proud to have contributed to this innovative project and looks forward to continued collaboration in the next phase.
