Alfen partners with Ellevio Energy Solutions to increase flexibility in Sweden’s electricity grid with 90MW/90MWh of installed power capacity

  • Partnership includes 5 sites spanning from 10MW to 40MW systems featuring Alfen’s TheBattery Elements solution
  • Systems will be designed for a multi-use purposes with an initial focus on delivering ancillary services on Sweden’s balancing markets to increase flexibility and stability in the grid, as well as reliability and availability of power for consumers

Almere, The Netherlands, 4 June 2024 – Alfen is partnering with Ellevio Energy Solutions, a Swedish energy service company in the Ellevio Group, to increase flexibility in Sweden’s electricity grid. The Ellevio Group is known for its electricity network company, one of the largest in Sweden. Together, Alfen and Ellevio aim to enhance the stability, reliability, and availability of the country’s electricity network, planning to install 90MW/90MWh of power capacity by the first half of 2025. These sites will feature Alfen’s TheBattery Elements, a proven industrial modular energy storage system for stationary applications that increases flexibility in the grid. In total these sites will have enough energy to power an equal amount of 18.000 Swedish households.

“We’re incredibly proud of the work we’re doing with Ellevio to strengthen and stabilise the Swedish grid to make power more reliable and available to consumers throughout the country,” said Stephanie Schockaert, Commercial Director for Alfen’s Energy Storage Solutions product line.

“Sweden is expected to consume more than twice as much electricity over the next 25 years. To support this growth, significant grid modernisation is required to stabilise the grid, increase capacity and support carbon-free energy solutions. As more intermittent and clean energy like wind and solar are rapidly entering the electricity system, balance in electricity supply and demand is vital. When the wind does not blow or the sun does not shine, battery systems ensure power is reliable and available for consumers.”

The 5 sites are coming online in phases. Alfen installed the first storage system in Grums in 2023 to better balance the national grid networks. At the time, this 10MW/10MWh site was Sweden’s largest battery energy storage solution. In early May 2024, Ellevio and Alfen celebrated the inauguration of a 15MW/15MWh system in Kungsbacka and a 15MW/15MWh system in Lindome after less than a year of construction. Two more systems will come online over the next 9 to -12 months in Malardalen and Örebro. When complete, the Orebro site will boast one of the absolute largest battery systems in Sweden with 40MW/40MWh of installed power capacity.

“We’re on an important and exciting journey with Alfen to build solutions that will help transition our energy system throughout Sweden,” said Kristofer Fröjd, Senior Vice President, Strategy & Business Development at Ellevio AB. “Collaborating with the Alfen team on our battery projects has proven highly rewarding and productive. Our teams have seamlessly merged, enabling us to effectively strategise, deploy, and manage our different battery systems. This synergy has cultivated a robust collaborative framework poised to drive future project success.”

Unlike other energy storage sites, these projects are stand-alone, meaning the systems are not connected to any renewable sources. For now, they will be used on the Swedish ancillary services (or secondary services) market to increase stability and flexibility in the grid and ensure the reliability and availability of energy to consumers.
