Van Leeuwen Oplaad installs new Alfen EV charging plaza at AFAS Software headquarters
The unique headquarters of leading Dutch software company AFAS was designed with sustainability and employee well-being top of mind. And when it came to installing EV charge points at the building’s parking facilities they turned to Alfen technology to provide a robust and scalable solution.
Challenge
The AFAS Software Experience Centre in Leusden, the Netherlands is not your typical corporate headquarters. Indeed, it features a sports centre, meditation rooms, a restaurant and even a theatre that’s open to the public. Sustainability was also key to the design with photovoltaic cells on the roof helping to meet the building’s energy needs. This solar energy is used in part to charge the company’s growing EV fleet, as well as the personal vehicles of employees and members of the public. Given the facility’s specific requirements, it was important that the building’s EV charging solution prioritised efficient demand management, ease of use, robustness and interoperability.
Solution
Installed in 2021, the original charging plaza can charge up to 100 EVs simultaneously. And our Smart Charging Network (SCN) software ensures that this high demand doesn’t cause large fluctuations in power consumption. The SCN connects all charging stations, allowing them to dynamically adjust their charging speed according to demand.
“Working with Alfen technology ensures that our charging capacity can expand in line with our growing needs and we can intelligently manage energy consumption,” explained Erik Koops, Facilities Manager at AFAS. “Alfen’s flexible and intuitive charge point solutions have become key to our ongoing sustainability strategy.”
When a new parking facility was added to the Experience Centre in July 2024, the scalability of our technology made it simple to expand the solution. This new installation, carried out by long-time Alfen partner Van Leeuwen Oplaad, featured 25 Eve Double Pro-line 22-kilowatt charge points.
“We currently only supply Alfen charging stations,” said Tim Van Leeuwen, Director of Van Leeuwen Oplaad. “Thanks to their proven reliability, we can always be confident that we’re providing our customers with the best possible service.”
Technical details
Manufactured in the Netherlands and featuring a robust glass fibre-reinforced exterior, Alfen’s Eve Double Pro-line is the ideal dual charging station for high-traffic public and semi-public environments. Its versatile 7-inch colour screen makes it easy to display key information such as charging instructions, levels and tariffs. It also provides a streamlined user experience, ensuring compliance with public access charging regulations such as the EU’s AFIR. In addition, an integrated RFID reader enables user identification so users can benefit from specific tariffs where applicable.
Implementation
As AFAS continues to accelerate its transition to renewable energy, implementing an efficient and integrated energy management strategy is critical – and our charging stations are set to play an important part in this. In the coming months, AFAS plans to connect the two charging plazas, along with other amenities, to the Experience Centre’s central energy management system to help to drive energy efficiency across the entire site. “The connectivity and interoperability of our charging stations makes it easy to integrate them into a holistic energy management ecosystem,” said Willem-Jan van Overbeeke, Head of Sales for the Nordics and CEE regions at Alfen. “We’re delighted that our technology can support AFAS in their environmental ambitions.”
