Meet Corné Oudshoorn

Meet Corné

Meet Corné Oudshoorn, a lead hardware design engineer at Alfen whose expertise in electronics helps shape the technology behind EV charging stations. From designing circuit boards to coordinating teamwork, Corné enjoys the diverse challenges of his role. His attention to detail and practical approach help ensure that Alfen’s charging solutions are reliable, durable and supportive of a sustainable future.

How did you get into energy technology and start working at Alfen?
Initially, I worked at KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, where my role focused on programming electronics. However, hardware development, my real passion, wasn't KNMI’s core activity. I began looking around for companies that specialised in hardware design and quickly discovered Alfen. From my first interaction, Alfen felt like the right fit, making the decision to join easy.

Can you describe your role and responsibilities?
As lead hardware design, I develop electronics and printed circuit boards used in Alfen’s EV charging stations. Beyond design, I also coach colleagues and coordinate between various teams or "chapters" to ensure the right expertise is brought together on relevant projects.

Which business unit do you work for?
I’m part of the Hardware team for our EV Charging business line. Our main focus is designing and improving in-house electronics for our EV charging stations. While some colleagues occasionally contribute to smart grid or energy storage projects, my work is fully dedicated to charging stations.

How does your work contribute to the energy transition and a more sustainable future?
My main motivation is designing high-quality, durable electronics that perform reliably over the long term. While circuit boards and components are generally standardised, focusing on durability means our products require fewer repairs and replacements, significantly reducing waste. Our EV charging stations play a direct role in enabling wider adoption of electric vehicles, helping Europe reduce its CO₂ footprint.

What do you enjoy most about working at Alfen?
Definitely the team spirit. Within our hardware team and across other departments, everyone’s voice matters. Whether you’re new or experienced, your input is equally valued. Alfen’s culture is open, supportive and collaborative, creating an environment where ideas flow freely and everyone feels included.

What has been the most interesting project you've worked on?
I enjoy the diversity of my role, which includes electronics design as well as production, software integration, serviceability and supply chain management. A particularly challenging period was the global chip shortage between 2020 and 2022. At times, production was at risk due to component scarcity. Every morning, our crisis team, which included myself, the financial director and purchasing specialists, worked intensively to secure necessary components. It was high pressure with no margin for error, but we successfully maintained production and supported Alfen’s continued growth. That period was especially challenging and rewarding.

What inspires you most in your role as an engineer?
Without a doubt, it’s the people. The supportive and collaborative atmosphere among colleagues inspires me daily. Knowing that everyone genuinely has each other’s back makes working under pressure easier and more enjoyable.

What advice would you give someone interested in energy technology?
Trust your instincts. If energy technology excites you, explore companies to find out where you feel most comfortable. First impressions are powerful indicators. Feeling instantly at ease at Alfen convinced me I’d found the right place.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I have diverse interests, including motorcycling. I enjoy riding myself as well as following the sport. I also like spending time outdoors, visiting museums and exploring new cities with my girlfriend and friends. I've recently completed a major home renovation that took about three and a half years, consuming most of my free time. Now that it's finished, I finally have more time to relax.
