Almere, 15 April 2026 – The battery energy storage system “BESS Apeldoorn”, located near Apeldoorn, is ready for energy market trading and is fully operational on the Dutch energy markets. The system has a power capacity of 15MW and a storage capacity of 30MWh, contributing to increased flexibility and stability of the electricity grid.

Strengthening grid stability and renewable integration
By integrating the battery system with the adjacent solar park, locally generated renewable energy can be stored efficiently and deployed at times of high demand or grid stress. This enhances renewable energy utilization and supports a more resilient and future-proof energy system.

With a capacity of 15MW/30MWh, the system provides flexible storage capacity and will actively participate in:

  • Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR)
  • aFRR and mFRR
  • Imbalance markets
  • Congestion management

Strong collaboration across the value chain
BESS Apeldoorn is a grid-scale battery energy storage system developed by Green Energy Storage (GES) on behalf of Encavis. Alfen is responsible for delivery and electrical integration. Alfen delivers the battery container and CATL EnerOne+ battery technology as a turnkey solution.  Greenchoice acts as offtaker of the system’s flexibility.

“The successful commissioning of the Apeldoorn battery demonstrates what can be achieved through strong collaboration with our partners across development, technology, construction and market access,” says Mario Schirru, CEO of Encavis. “Projects like this are essential for strengthening grid stability and enabling renewable energy to be used where and when it is needed most.”

Advancing the energy transition
The commissioning and start of energy market trading of BESS Apeldoorn marks another step in the deployment of large-scale battery storage in the Netherlands. By adding flexibility to the electricity grid, the system supports renewable integration and strengthens overall system reliability.

Stephanie Schockaert, Sales Director Energy Storage Alfen: “We are proud to once again take an important step together with Green Energy Storage to further strengthen the stability and flexibility of the regional energy grid, this time for Encavis.”
