Alfen battery systems stabilise energy supply in Sweden as Ellevio Energy Solutions invests to support growing renewable generation

  • Alfen’s battery systems help balance Sweden’s electricity grid as renewables grow
  • Ellevio Energy Solutions new battery parks in Mora and Söderala have a combined capacity of 80MW/80MWh
  • Batteries will provide ancillary services to Svenska kraftnät, ensuring grid stability, and will be used to offer other grid services and participate in other markets

Almere, the Netherlands, 22 October 2024 – Alfen’s ongoing installation of battery storage technologies with Ellevio, one of Sweden's largest electricity network companies, is playing a crucial role in balancing the country’s grid. In its latest agreement, Alfen will supply Ellevio with 2 storage systems for the battery parks in Mora and Söderala that will have a combined installed capacity of 80 MW/80MWh. Installation is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.

Sweden’s energy landscape is rapidly evolving with increasing amounts of wind and solar power, creating a need for advanced grid solutions to manage supply fluctuations. As Sweden accelerates its transition to renewable energy, Ellevio is heavily investing in large-scale battery parks to stabilise the electricity supply and support the country’s growing demand for sustainable power.

Alfen’s TheBattery Elements is an industrial and modular design with high energy density and can be delivered in modular outdoor building blocks. By integrating it into its battery parks, Ellevio will absorb imbalances in its energy generation, providing critical ancillary services to Svenska kraftnät. This technology is vital for maintaining the grid's frequency at 50 Hz and prevent disruptions. These battery parks will also participate in other grid services markets such as intra-day and day-ahead, ensuring further renewable integration and grid resilience.

“As Sweden continues to push towards its sustainability targets, Alfen is proud to support Ellevio and other partners with the technology and expertise they need to create a more resilient and sustainable electricity grid,” said Stephanie Schockaert, Commercial Director for Alfen’s Energy Storage Systems product line.

A growing partnership and expanding BESS portfolio

Alfen and Ellevio’s collaboration began in 2022, marking the start of a strategic partnership to enhance grid stability in Sweden. Their first system was commissioned in 2023, and the Mora and Söderala battery parks represent one of the largest battery investments in Sweden. By 2025, Alfen is expected to have helped Ellevio add a total of 170MWh of installed capacity to their energy storage portfolio.

“The partnership with Alfen and the collaboration with our teams have been essential in integrating battery technology that underpins our commitment to a stable and reliable electricity supply,” says Kristofer Fröjd, SVP of Strategy & Business Development at Ellevio. “The advanced technology used in these battery parks not only helps balance the grid but also enables us to respond quickly to the growing demands of renewable energy integration.”
