Alfen announces Pionix partnership for simpler, more reliable smart charging
Almere, the Netherlands, 28 October 2026 – Alfen, a leading European energy solutions provider, is expanding its collaboration with Pionix, an EV charging software company, to make smart charging more reliable and easier to deploy across home, business and public charging. The companies have worked together for some time and are now scaling their collaboration through Alfen’s implementation of the LF Energy EVerest software stack.
The partnership combines Alfen’s charging expertise and product development with Pionix’s specialist knowledge of charging software and communication standards. Alfen’s ambition is to deliver an industry-leading implementation of ISO 15118, combining reliable interoperability, rigorous testing and a strong foundation for new charging capabilities.
Built on shared expertise and open standards
EVerest is an open-source software platform for EV charging, initiated by Pionix and hosted by LF Energy, part of the Linux Foundation. It provides a common framework for implementing charging standards and managing communication between vehicles, chargers, backends and supporting systems. Pionix remains a major contributor to the project and supports manufacturers integrating EVerest into their products.
The wider EVerest community brings together expertise from companies across the energy, automotive and technology sectors. By developing and testing against a shared implementation of industry standards, manufacturers and other ecosystem partners can build on common knowledge rather than solving the same technical challenges independently.
Pionix also works with Hubject, having achieved official Plug & Charge pre-certification for the EVerest software stack. As the first software stack to receive this pre-certification, EVerest can help simplify and accelerate the certification process for charger manufacturers through Hubject’s eMobility compliance centre. This supports more reliable interoperability between vehicles, charging infrastructure and the wider charging ecosystem.
Open standards give vehicles, chargers and supporting systems a common basis for communication. For drivers, that can mean a more consistent and dependable charging experience. For charge point operators, it supports more predictable, standards-compliant charger behaviour, including across protocols such as OCPP.
Alfen will combine this open foundation with its own product engineering, integration and support. The aim is practical: reliable charging in everyday use, straightforward commissioning for installers and a strong foundation for introducing new capabilities across Alfen’s charging portfolio.
Confidence through testing and continuous improvement
EVerest development follows established software engineering practices, including code review, automated testing, third-party interoperability testing and feedback from real-world deployments. The project has also undergone an independent security audit commissioned through LF Energy, supporting a transparent approach to security and continuous improvement.
Alfen will build on these practices through product-specific integration, rigorous validation and carefully managed firmware releases. The focus is not only on individual software functions, but on the complete charging experience: straightforward commissioning for installers, dependable operation for customers and charge point operators, and convenient charging for drivers.
EVerest includes implementations of ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20, as well as OCPP 1.6, 2.0.1 and 2.1. Together, these provide a software foundation for communication between vehicles, chargers and backend systems and for capabilities such as Plug & Charge.
For drivers, Plug & Charge can make charging simpler by allowing a compatible vehicle and charger to authenticate automatically, without requiring a charging card or app for each session.
The expanded collaboration is part of Alfen’s continued investment in reliable and increasingly capable charging. By combining Alfen’s product expertise, Pionix’s specialist knowledge and the shared development behind EVerest, Alfen is strengthening the software foundation for its next generation of home, business and public charging solutions.
“Alfen has shipped charging hardware across Europe for years and knows what dependable operation means for installers, operators and drivers. Seeing that expertise combined with EVerest, ISO 15118 and OCPP is exactly what the open source project was created for. Together we can make a difference for EV Drivers and Operators by making EV Charging easier and more reliable.” - Dr. Marco Möller, CEO, Pionix GmbH
“Smart charging only works when the whole ecosystem works together. EVerest gives us a tested foundation for ISO 15118, so we can focus on where Alfen adds value: product quality, reliable installation and strong customer support.” - Michael Colijn, CEO, Alfen
