As one of Europe’s largest parking service providers, Q-Park continues to innovate and differentiate itself through quality and an outstanding customer experience. As part of this strategy, Q-Park has selected Alfen as one of its preferred suppliers of smart EV charging solutions.

Present in More Than 500 Cities

With more than 3,500 employees and operations in over 500 cities, Q-Park is one of Europe’s leading parking service providers. The company has established a strong reputation as a quality leader in the parking industry.

In the Netherlands alone, Q-Park operates more than 590 parking facilities, including 53 Park & Ride locations and 112 bicycle parking garages. With over 1,800 EV charging points, electric vehicle charging has become an essential part of its service offering. This development led Q-Park to bring all charging activities in-house in 2025, operating as an independent Charge Point Operator (CPO).

The Challenge

Peter Mertens, Head of Real Estate & Energy Services at Q-Park, explains: “We started installing EV charging points in 2012. With the arrival of electric vehicles, charging was initially an additional service outsourced to existing CPOs. This remained the case for many years, but given the rapid growth of electric mobility, we began our journey to become a CPO ourselves in 2022.”

Today, EV charging has become an integral part of Q-Park’s vision of ‘Quality in Parking.’ Reliable charging services and a seamless payment experience are key elements of that vision.

Tuur Schaeken, Manager EV Charging & Energy Services at Q-Park Netherlands, adds: “Visitors should be able to charge their vehicles easily, even without a charging card. At the same time, we want to offer clear and transparent pricing, without barriers or uncertainty for the customer. Thanks to the displays on Alfen charging stations, users can access information on-site and start their charging session directly.”

In addition, Q-Park requires high system availability across its growing charging network. Remote management capabilities, firmware updates, and modular serviceability are therefore essential to maintaining reliable operations.

The Solution

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) requires equal treatment of end users and promotes simple, accessible charging experiences. In practice, this means drivers must be able to charge quickly and easily, without mandatory subscriptions, while benefiting from transparent pricing and flexible payment options.

Tuur Schaeken explains: “AFIR calls for simple and accessible payment methods that do not require a charging card. QR codes are an obvious solution, but in practice QR stickers are vulnerable to fraud. It was essential for us to find a solution that minimises this risk. Thanks to the displays on Alfen charging stations, we can now use dynamic QR codes generated directly on the charger itself—a scalable and significantly more secure solution.”

Alfen’s charging stations provide the user-friendly interface and transparency Q-Park requires, while supporting efficient operation through remote monitoring, software updates, and high serviceability. This enables Q-Park to offer a reliable charging experience that aligns with its commitment to quality and customer convenience.

Future Opportunities

Q-Park’s charging infrastructure continues to expand. By the end of 2025, the Q-Park Mahler parking facility in Amsterdam’s Zuidas business district was equipped with 110 Alfen charging stations, demonstrating the continued growth of EV charging within the company’s network.

According to Peter Mertens, Alfen is the right partner to support that growth: “What we appreciate most are the short communication lines, also at an international level, and a hands-on mentality that ensures we are well supported as a customer. Alfen is continuously improving itself. It is a solid organisation with mature, customer-focused products.”

Willem-Jan van Overbeeke of Alfen Charging Equipment sees further opportunities ahead: “There are many more possibilities to enhance the parking experience. Through our direct relationship with Q-Park as a CPO, we can now work together effectively to realise those opportunities.”

As EV adoption continues to accelerate, the partnership between Q-Park and Alfen demonstrates how reliable charging infrastructure, transparent payment solutions, and customer-centric innovation can help create a seamless mobility experience for drivers across Europe.
