As an Product Development Engineer, you will be working within our Research and Development department (R&D). With various technical disciplines, the R&D department is responsible for development inquiries for our three business units: The Battery (Energy Storage Systems), Smart Grid Solutions (Transformer Stations) and Alfen Charging Equipment (Charging Stations). 

In your role as Product Development Engineer, you will be working for our business unit Charging Equipment. You will be responsible for strengthening the PLM (Produce Lifecycle Management) team. In this role, you get the technical responsibility for our Public Chargers. Innovating our in-market products and collaborate with various departments to tackle diverse challenges; like production related issues (for our own production facility here in Almere), product upgrades, cost downs etc. 

Next to that, the following tasks belong to your functional profile: 

  • ensuring the product design is optimized to meet target quality, cost and performance using DfX methodology, with a strong focus on DfA & DfM; 

  • Working on product simplifications (such as part reductions), upgrades (i.e. new features, improving validation results of existing products etc.), cost downs and integrations (i.e. integrating new PCBA platforms into our products); 

  • You take initiative to lead assigned Engineering Change Requests through the ECR and ECN stages; 

  • Working on setting up product definitions (requirements) and ensuring completion of technical documentation within the PDM environment of all existing parts for manufacturing; 

  • Develop products, modules and parts which meet the requirements and evaluate the feasibility of design proposals; 

  • Dimension according to load case and material use (mainly sheet metals and plastic injection molding); 

  • Document the design into a full 3D, 2D definition and Bill of Materials.

What do we ask? 

You have a pro-active attitude and manage to connect multiple disciplines; not waiting for things to happen, but making sure they happen!  

Next to that, you are not afraid to ask questions and you are eager to learn new things. Also, being alert for new opportunities and issues and act accordingly at an early stage. Besides a portfolio with relevant projects you have worked on, for a good match we would like to see in your resume that you have: 

  • 2+ years of experience with at least a bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or Industrial Design Engineering; 

  • Fluent in English; 

  • Ability to make your own work breakdown and schedule your own tasks in a timely matter; 

  • Ability to make clean 3D models suitable for tool making (Creo (preferred), SolidWorks, CATIA, Inventor, NX or similar); 

  • Experience with product data management (PDM / PLM) software. Windchill is preferred; 

  • Know how to create 2D drawings suitable for mass production and Quality Control; 

  • Dimension and design according to load case, material use (plastic, metals, TPE/TPU, composites) and manufacturing method (sheet metal, injection molding); 

  • Able to iterate product development from initial ideation all the way up to production for mass volume;
