Alfen supplies energy storage solution for Smappee’s cleantech hub in Belgium
Alfen supplied Smappee, a designer and manufacturer of future-proof energy monitoring systems, with a 2.5MWh battery energy storage system for their new headquarters in Harelbeke, Belgium. In addition, Alfen has realised a new 5MVA grid connection on site, to connect with the distribution grid of Fluvius (formerly Eandis and Infrax).
Stefan Grosjean, CEO at Smappee, comments: “Our new headquarters, Snowball, will be a state-of-the-art cleantech hub. The brand-new eco-friendly building will feature an energy lab, will house an accelerator for cleantech companies and will offer flex offices for cleantech-related start-ups and companies. Snowball will be powered by a unique mix of renewable technologies such as solar PV, energy storage, and ice buffer and EV charging, managed by Smappee’s smart energy management technology. Alfen’s energy storage system facilitates multiple applications: increased self-consumption of our locally generated solar power, load balancing for the charging of electric vehicles and grid stability services (frequency containment reserve). Over time we may also use the batteries to enable a fully off-grid energy system.”
Yves Vercammen, sales manager at Alfen, comments: “We are proud to have delivered a fully integrated storage solution including grid connection to Smappee’s innovative new headquarters. Our experience across various business cases for storage systems helped us to optimally combine self-consumption, load balancing for EVs and frequency containment in this project.”
