Meet Hanno
As a project leader at Alfen, Hanno ensures the successful delivery of smart grid solutions for our customers. With a background in technical business administration and a passion for technical innovation, he has been with Alfen for 5 years in his current role. We sat down with him to learn more about his journey, work and what drives him in Europe’s transition to a more sustainable future.
How did you come to work in energy technology and at Alfen?
I started my career as a planner at Alfen. After a few job changes, I realised I wanted to become a project leader, despite having no prior experience in the role. Alfen saw potential in me and gave me the opportunity to grow into the position. Five years later, I’m still learning and thriving in this role.
What do you enjoy most about working at Alfen?
The variety of projects and the dynamic team atmosphere make the work fulfilling. Whether it’s large-scale solar farms or the complex projects like our work with Dutch grid operator Enexis, every day brings something new. Alfen’s collaborative culture and the chance to contribute to impactful energy transition projects are particularly motivating.”
Describe your role as a project leader, especially in the context of the Enexis project?
My main responsibility is ensuring that materials and people are in the right place at the right time. The Enexis project is unique because we act as the main contractor, coordinating multiple external parties and overseeing safety on-site. It’s a complex challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see it all come together.
What do you do in your free time to unwind?
Most of my free time is dedicated to my family—I have 3 young children, and they keep me busy and energised. Outside of that, I play volleyball twice a week. It’s a great way to stay active, clear my head and enjoy some friendly competition. With young kids, time for hobbies is limited, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
How do you approach client relationships and their unique needs?
I believe in honesty and clear communications. It’s essential to understand the root of a client’s request and provide them with a realistic answer, even if it’s not what they want to hear. Building personal connections with customers is equally important. It creates trust and makes collaboration much smoother.
What’s been one of the most unique projects you’ve worked on?
The project on the Rijnkade in Arnhem (Netherlands) is one of the most unique ones. It required us to adapt a standard product to meet the client’s specific needs, such as implementing additional ventilation and modifying the design. It’s a challenge, but it will be satisfying to see the final solution.
What excites you about smart grid solutions?
The energy transition is at the heart of what we do. Smart grid solutions help resolve grid congestion and enable renewable energy sources like solar and wind. It’s exciting to be part of a company that plays such a pivotal role in this transformation.
What advice do you have for colleagues interested in energy technology?
It’s a sector full of challenges and opportunities. Having a technical mindset helps, but being proactive, adaptable, and ready to learn is even more important. It’s gratifying to see the impact of your work on such a critical global issue.
