Meet Linda

Meet Linda Boatemaa, a research engineer at Alfen, whose expertise in materials science plays a key role in developing innovative and sustainable energy solutions. From tackling real-world engineering challenges to balancing her dynamic career with family life, Linda’s story is one of curiosity, adaptability and impact.

How did you get started in energy technology and at Alfen?
“Back in the summer of 2022, I was searching for a new challenge when I came across an opening at Alfen on LinkedIn. What really drew me in was the company’s unique connection to the energy transition—especially its work in energy storage solutions. That mission resonated with me, and after a series of interviews, I decided to contribute my expertise to the energy transition by joining Alfen.”

What do you do as a research engineer?
“My work is all about understanding materials used in Alfen products from a microstructural perspective—why they behave the way they do, why they fail, and how we can improve them. I deal with a variety of material challenges across all product lines. One day, I might be investigating corrosion issues in metals; the next, I’m working on plastics. I collaborate with product development engineers on current products and with technology managers on future innovations. Together, we find the best solutions.”

How does your work contribute to the energy transition?
“My role as a materials scientist aligns with Alfen’s first value of sustainability. Every product we build is physically composed of different materials and systems. My job is to ensure we select the right materials for durability, performance, and environmental impact. By researching new material technologies, I help Alfen make informed decisions that support a cleaner, more efficient energy future.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“The diversity—both in the projects I work on and the people I collaborate with. Since I’m not tied to one specific product, I get to apply my expertise across multiple areas. I also appreciate the flexibility that Alfen offers. As a mother of two, I work part-time, and that balance is incredibly valuable to me.”

What’s one of the most unique projects you’ve worked on?
“One of the most interesting challenges I’m tackling is improving the performance of the plastic housings of our EV charging equipment. Plastics used outdoors are exposed to the elements and affected by rain, temperature fluctuations and optical radiation. Together with colleagues from Product Development and Procurement, we are working to enhance these housings for superior durability and performance.”

What excites you most about being an engineer?
“I love presenting my research to people outside my field. Seeing their enthusiasm and curiosity when they start to understand the science behind materials is incredibly rewarding.”

What advice would you give to someone interested in energy technology?
“There are countless opportunities to make an impact in the energy transition. Find your niche, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to challenge existing solutions.” How do you unwind outside of work? “I love watching detective series and medical dramas—but only when the house is completely quiet! I like to focus on every single detail without distractions.”
